Post D:organic waste management proposal

In the globalized system dominated by a relative handful of corporations, organic waste like food and housing are wasted while the needs of hundreds of millions go unmet. All manner of consumer commodities are produced cheaply, offered for sale at high prices, and often discarded unsold by corporations that dismiss the waste as a cost of doing business. These corporations promote disposable goods over reusable ones, design rapidly obsolete products, and ensure that repair is more expensive than replacement. Enormous volumes of still-usable goods to landfill that poison the exurban communities pressed into hosting them, with a disproportionate impact on the poor.

Most people walk into the kitchen and think, “ What do I want?” which quickly transforms into, “ What product should I buy?” We need to think differently. When we walk into the kitchen, we ask, “ What do I have? What can we make with it?” We use whatever resources we have available.

I sketch my design , which is  a food recycle box, this box should be place in the front door of the restaurant and the street food store, people can pick the food for free after 9 pm, the timing is perfect for people who working late night and some people can not afford the cost of the meal, so that they can take it back home and cook the food with a recipe. In this case, maybe some restaurants not willing to do that, so this design should have support from the government.

Post C: Organic Waste Management

Organic waste management is very important, everyone have to deal with waste problems. The reed (mention in post A), it took many hand to pick, process, pack, unpack, and put it on display. People need to work in the production, marketing, distribution, and preparation of food. Like many jobs in the burgeoning service economy, food service jobs are poorly paid, unreliable, and offer few opportunities for advancement. In one survey, only 13 percent of employed part-time, lack health insurance, and need welfare benefits. Cruelly, food service employees are still substantially more likely than the general population to be unable to afford enough to eat.

It’s estimated that by the 2075, the world population will increase around 9.5 billion people, there is a global necessity to practice more sustainable food production, consumption and disposal method in order to maintain food security while minimizing harmful effects on the environment, Australia will still waste valuable resources this is the reason why organic waste management is important, While organic waste prevention campaigns have occasionally targeted businesses, governments and institutions, they have overwhelmingly continued a long running pattern integral to the fetishization of waste: namely, displacing blame from producers onto consumers. In New South Wales households surveyed as part of the food waste avoidance benchmark study to compile the information of knowledge about attitudes and behavior around food waste, which is the part of the organic waste, There is a relatively empty box set up for people to place their unwanted but still- good food and furniture in, and one hundred yards away, there was a giant dumpster overflowing with things that should have been in that box. Me and a few frustrated friends began sorting through the dumpster. Where we had expected to find a few dollars’ worth of things that had been discarded, cosmetics, medical supplies, furniture, and everything else people fit into dorms.

Indeed, dumpster diving remained a morally charged activity long after the first trash tour, on that brought new people into the group as well as reaffirming the commitments of those already involved. The collective dumpster dive symbolized something different for individuals who had long since been “radicalized” and were already relying on recovering ex-commodities to survive.

B: Data Methods

How can we be more environmentally sustainable with organic waste?

This means we need to reduce the amount of avoidable organic waste.

Organic waste also impacts environments through waste energy and resources that that have been used to produce, packaging and transport. For example, 822 lm water takes to produce 1 kg of apples would be waste if not used to consumption.

It is not just that the food we buy has a sordid history of exploitation behind them. It is also that the food that actually gets sold is shadowed by an enormous number of products, like the apple, are never sold, never consumed, but simply wasted. Yet while the average consumer might spend a long time perusing the store’s shelves, but they never think for a second about the lumpy grey trash bags outside. Even if that shopper opened one, he would probably assume that the food in it was dirty or rotten, even though much of it is just as fresh and nutrition as the food they bought inside. Accustomed to thinking that anything in the garbage must be polluted and valueless, few of us see massive wealth of one time commodities that, in modern capitalism, ends up wasted. Shortly the garbage truck arrives to begin the apple’s long journey to a landfill in one of the states to which Sydney sends its trash.

According to the national sustainability Council, the majority of food Australian waste comes from fresh food leftover, the highest amount of waste is disposable containers and vegetables.

Transporting our lifestyle to zero waste, firstly, avoid one-time item, like coffee cups, we can use a reusable stainless steel water bottle. For the takeaway food, we can :

-Use a reusable grocery bag (can buy from any grocery store)
– Use sustainable or zero waste soap, shampoo and conditioner
– Use organic deodorant cream
– Go Bulk Shopping!
– Make your own products

Post A:My one day ORGANIC WASTE

People have organic waste everyday, at first, it is the environment to everyone, organic waste will be decomposite to greenhouse gases by bacterial, the volume of greenhouse gases can be 100kg by 1ton food, of course, greenhouse gases are the most important factor of global warming. The organic waste of Australian households has a substantial impact on the environment, although some organic wasted are unavoidable, a large part of this problem demanded avoidable or edible are being wasted, very little is being done in Australian households to recycle. In 2013, most organic waste generation New South Wales was set to landfill, organic waste also impact the environment the waste energy and resources that have been used to produce transport. All my life I’ve been concerned about wasting.

I conducted my one day waste audit of all the ‘waste’ that I produce is in the following graph and images. Basically, my daily waste is about the organic waste and non – recyclable waste, but what I am focus on is the organic waste. As we can see though the pie chart, almost half of waste is the organic waste.屏幕快照 2016-06-12 下午4.03.54

One of my element of the organic waste is the reed leaves, which is from the Chinese traditional food, Zongzi, a pyramid-shaped dumpling made of sticky rice and wrapped in reed leaves, will have pride of place on our dining tables in the days to come.

Lily, W. 2016, The One Studio, photography , Sydney, private collections

Life cycle of the reed:

Reed, the reed leaves, reed stems, all can be used as a medicine. Medicinal value for solid barrier to soil and plants. Reed stem can make paper and rayon, spun rayon material, also for woven seats, curtain, etc; Contain a large number of proteins and sugars when young, good for fodder; The buds are edible; In addition to that, if I don’t use the reed and just throw them to the garbage bin, the reed will just been wasted and valueless.

What changed and made me more extreme was the discovery that there’s all this food. I think that a lot of people will stop and pick up a lamp on the curbside, with the sign that says “Take me.” But it seems like a big step to go to taking food. And I never really believed it was possible to find good things in the garbage on a regular basis about organic waste.
